Grade 12: Well, What Do You Know?

As many of you have been focussed on classes, exams, grad, and post-secondary planning lately, it may have dawned on you that your days in high school are numbered. Before too long you'll be moving on, so why not take some time to pass along the knowledge that you've gleaned. No, I'm not asking you to teach grade 12 Physics, but think about the informal high school knowledge and skills you've gained throughout your four years!

Advice to Incoming Grade 9 Students

Your assignment is to write an advice column style post on your class blog in response to one of the questions below. Your post should respond to the question with practical suggestions for actions that will lead to a healthy solution of the concern. You may wish to use specific examples to clarify your advice, but please do not use real people's names.

Questions from grade nine students: (choose one)
  • I'm not super outgoing, how can I feel more comfortable at Maples?
  • Maples seems really big, how do I learn where I'm going? Where should I stay away from?

  • I want to make the most of high school. What things should I get involved with?
  • Are the exams really as hard as they say? How do I get ready and do well?
  • What are the best things about high school?

  • Grades are important to me. How much do I really need to study to do well?
  • What's the deal with spares? What really happens in that time?

  1. I dont want to make mistakes! What should I not do in high school?

Honestly, everyone makes mistakes in high school or actually even people outside of high school make a lot of mistakes. It just depends if you keep making the same mistakes or learn from the mistake. High school is the time to explore who you are and who you want to be, so be daring. Try everything you've always wanted to try. If you never had the courage to sing, do it.

The best and easiest way to prepare for exams is to keep up with your homework throughout the course, and review it throughout the semester as well, so it is not forgotten. The exams are not as difficult as you may have heard, as long as you keep up. I like to think of them as just a final cumulative test. The most important thing is to stay calm and be conifident, and to not second guess yourself, at the exam.

  3. Maples seems really big, how do I learn where I'm going? Where should I stay away from? You never really will learn where every class is but you don't need to, just find out where and when your own classes are. I'd stay away from any doors that aren't the front door.

    - I would've most definitely joined more sports as I could. It really wouldn't hurt to just try out for a team. Don't be discouraged when you don't make it, think of it as "there's always another chance" you let yourself down if you don't try.
    - another would be staying away from drama from your friends. You WILL get into fights with friends... People WILL find ways to out you down, and honestly, the only thing I can say is that you'll experience the bad before you reach the good.

  5. Exams are not that hard. If you study for tests and stay focused in class you will do great. You just have to start preparing early. Exams are just like normal tests but worth more marks.

  6. "I don't want to makes mistakes. What things should I not do in high school?"

You cant choose to 'not make mistakes', specially in highschool.. There are times where you WILL make mistakes even if you dont want to. But that doesnt mean that you should do everything that you want to do because "its ok to make mistakes".. Yes, its ok to make mistakes, But be responsible for them, and be ready for what the outcome might be. Choices are also very important. Before doing or commiting something, think about the consiquences first and what it can do to you and to the people around you (good or bad). Making mistakes is not a bad thing, but be sure to learn from it :D

    ENJOY BEING IN HIGHSCHOOL!:) hehe

  7. If I could go back to the beginning of grade 9 I definitely would not have ditched any classes. Once you start ditching it becomes such a bad habit and before you know it, you'll be so far behind and it will be really hard to catch up. Also I would have participated in as many sports as possible. I would not have followed my friends and allowed them to persway me to do bad things all the time rather than getting an education for myself. EVERYBODY in high school gets bullied so don't think it's just you. Do whatever you need to do to make you feel good about yourself. I'm now realizing all the things I could have done to prevent all the bad things that have happened but just keep your head up because you are not the only one going through it.

  8. some people learn from their mistakes, but the only person who is smart(intelligent)who learn from other peoples mistakes.
Try to avoid people who misleads you. Stay away from trouble, try to make better friends who you can trust.

  9. What's the deal with spares? What really happens in that time?

Spares are basically a "free time" period in your schedule. Teachers do advise that the student uses his/her spares wisely on school related subjects such as completing homework, studying for a test, research projects, etc. Otherwise, students are free to do what they want during that time (with the exemption of not disrupting classes in sessions, roaming in the hallways, sitting on stairwells). Students often choose to hang out in various places such as the cafeteria, library and open areas during this time. Some students do a "sit-in". A "sit-in" is when a student ask the teacher if he/she can join the class. Sit-ins are usually done during Physical Education classes and a student with a spare at the time wishes to join in.

The amount of spares a student can have depends on their grade level and the subjects they have chosen to take. Grade 9 students do not have any spares in the schedule for both Semester One and Semester Two. Grade 10 students have a spare every other day for the whole school year. Grade 11 and Grade 12 Students may choose to have spares if they wish.
